Reducing reliance on welled systems and municipal water supply
Many cities in Mexico are dealing with the ongoing pressures of many welled systems in their municipal water supply working to capacity.Â
Coupled with strong population growth, it is becoming increasingly important to create independent, sustainable water systems, rather than relying on centrally controlled large-scale infrastructure to provide all of their water.
Shortly after the installation of an Ecolab, Hidrotecno had been contacted by their maintenance manager to look at rainwater harvesting strategies to reduce their reliance on the well water and the municipal water supply.
In these circumstances, rainwater harvesting is an important source of clean water and is an effective and efficient solution in providing for commercial, industrial, and residential buildings looking to save water, money, and the environment.
Becoming self-sufficient in Lerma De Villada
Previously, this Ecolab in Lerma De Villada had only used rainwater to assist their sewer system and they were excited to explore the possibilities with a more intentional approach
Three new systems were installed to cover 3200 m2 across three different industrial buildings. With sustainability being front of mind, many of the storage tanks were able to be recycled to ensure there was a minimal waste, and sufficient capacity for the rainwater harvested from the large catchment areas.Â
The project was a huge success. Despite being at the end of the rainy session, the property was able to harvest more than 150,000 litres of rainwater. Furthermore, upon chemical analysis, it was determined that the harvested rainwater had better parameters than the wellwater. Rainwater is now being used throughout all of their processes and services, and they are operating from a place of abundance.
In their system, three smart, simple products were specifically chosen to facilitate the collection of an abundance of clean water.

Leaf Eater Commercial
The Leaf Eater Commercial Rain Head is a robust rain head designed specifically for large-scale and commercial buildings. They are built to handle huge volumes of water, to the tune of 20 litres per second. Easy to install, and even easier to maintain – the angled mesh screen ensures leaves, debris, and mosquitos are kept out of the rain harvesting system.
Maelstrom Filter
The Maelstrom Filter’s advanced design combines super-fine filtration and super-high water catchment efficiency to capture massive amounts of water while removing ultra-fine particles down to 180 microns.Â
Flap Valves
An important tool that ensures rain harvesting systems can handle high water flows and stay oxygenated. Flap Valves help keep pests out of the pipework while ensuring there is an unimpeded flow of water during rainfall events.
