However, not all mains water supplies\u00a0offer a ready and reliable source of water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Population pressures, conflict, political upheaval, accidental contamination, poor resource management\u00a0and other challenges can\u00a0restrict\u00a0the availability of mains water. In extreme situations, it may\u00a0become\u00a0completely\u00a0unavailable for\u00a0extended\u00a0periods of time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0these situations,\u00a0rain harvesting can offer a level of\u00a0water security\u00a0for your household that\u00a0the city\u2019s infrastructure cannot provide.

Water security\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In 2013, the\u00a0United Nations\u00a0(UN)\u00a0defined\u00a0water security<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cthe capacity\u2026 to safeguard sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality water\u201d.\u00a0It also noted that a key aspect of water security is preserving ecosystems, as environmental degradation can cause or exacerbate problems with water security.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As water is not only necessary for human health and wellbeing, but also for sustaining livelihoods and even socio-economic development, a threat to any aspect of water security is a serious issue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unreliable mains water supplies\u00a0obviously do not meet the water security\u00a0brief. Instead, they\u00a0can compromise water security for individual households and entire cities and regions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By addressing all these issues, rain harvesting is one viable solution to the challenge of water scarcity that can be implemented at a household and\/or neighbourhood level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is in harmony with the UN\u2019s acknowledgement that it is sometimes necessary for investment in water security to occur at the local or micro level, and that solutions to water security challenges will not come from the public sector alone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>

World Bank recommendations\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

In its 2017 report on water scarcity in North Africa and the Middle East, the World Bank suggested three potentially complementary approaches to overcoming water scarcity and insecurity. One of these was to provide more water to meet demand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among its suggestions, the World Bank\u00a0noted that while Rain Harvesting systems\u00a0already\u00a0provide an important water supply for many rural communities,\u00a0urban rain harvesting will become increasingly important for ensuring water security\u00a0in urban areas, particularly in the face of growing urbanisation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>

Rain Harvesting & water security in practice\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0key\u00a0goal of Rain Harvesting is to harvest and store cleaner water and lots of it. This reflects the UN\u2019s\u00a0water security definition of\u00a0\u201cadequate quantities of acceptable quality water\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Achieving this goal\u00a0means going beyond the simplistic approach of adding pipes between your gutters and tank. Instead, it\u00a0involves\u00a0applying the Rain Harvesting System Design Pillars<\/a>\u00a0to filter, divert and otherwise protect the water you harvest.\u00a0This means\u00a0using rain heads and\/or Maelstrom filters to filter leaves and debris from your water, using first flush diverters to isolate and discharge contaminated water, and securing your rainwater tank with appropriate screens and covers to protect the rainwater you harvest.\u00a0You can\u00a0see examples of systems that\u00a0apply these pillars\u00a0here<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While many Rain Harvesting systems are installed on individual houses, it may also be possible to pool your resources with your neighbours by installing a common rainwater tank that stores water harvested from several different homes.\u00a0Obviously, this puts the burden of maintenance on everyone\u2019s shoulders, but it can be an effective way to lower the costs associated with the most expensive aspect of any rain harvesting system: the tank.\u00a0<\/span>
