In a \u201cwet\u201d Rain Harvesting system (also called a \u201ccharged\u201d system), the pipes from your gutters go down the wall and underground,\u00a0then up into your tank.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because they travel\u00a0underground and sit below the level of your tank inlets, these\u00a0pipes\u00a0remain full of water even during periods of time without rainfall.<\/p>\n

Water collecting system is a technology that collects and stores water for human utilize. It extends from basic rain barrels to more expand structures with pumps, tanks, and decontamination system.<\/p>\n

Many Rain Harvesting systems are designed as wet systems because the size of the building and the location of the tank make it impractical to have pipes running directly from your gutters to your tank. Those systems are also preferred by some people who consider them to be more aesthetically pleasing than \u201cdry\u201d systems<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Managing\u00a0your wet system\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Without proper management and precautions, wet Rain Harvesting systems can become a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes and can\u00a0facilitate\u00a0anaerobic fermentation<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To solve these problems, it\u2019s necessary to use appropriate screens and filters to mosquito-proof your pipes, and to drain the water from your soaking system pipes \u2013 effectively transforming it into a \u201cdry\u201d system\u201d<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Draining\u00a0your pipes\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

Anaerobic fermentation\u00a0is a natural process that\u00a0occurs when\u00a0leaves and other organic materials decompose in an oxygen-starved environment such as your water-filled pipes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This process releases thiols and hydrogen sulphide\u00a0(\u201crotten egg\u201d smell).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unless you take preventative steps, water in your pipes that\u2019s been fouled by anaerobic fermentation\u00a0is\u00a0pushed into your tank when it rains, contaminating the cleaner water you\u2019ve already harvested.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The best way to prevent anaerobic fermentation\u00a0from contaminating your rainwater\u00a0is to\u00a0drain your water-filled pipes (also called \u201ccharged lines\u201d) between each rainfall event so there\u2019s no water for leaves to decompose in.<\/p>\n

This can\u00a0be accomplished by installing an in-ground first flush diverter, which slowly drains the water from your pipes. Alternatively, you can program a flow controller to automatically drain the water from your pipes or use a sliding gate valve to manually release this water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mosquito-proofing your pipes\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, making your wet\u00a0system\u2019s\u00a0water-filled pipes an enticing place for them to call home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As mosquitoes can spread a range of\u00a0diseases (including dengue fever,\u00a0ross\u00a0river fever, malaria and\u00a0ebola) and contaminate\u00a0your\u00a0rainwater, it pays to keep them out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In many jurisdictions (including some Australian states<\/a>), pipes that hold water\u00a0must be screened\u00a0to prevent mosquitoes for entering and breeding in them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Non-corrosive metal\u00a0screens and filters with an aperture (hole\u00a0size) of not more than\u00a01mm\u00a0can effectively keep mosquitoes out\u00a0of your wet system pipes.<\/p>\n

Mosquito-proof rain heads\u00a0such as Blue Mountain\u00a0Co\u2019s\u00a0Leaf Eater range<\/a> can be installed on downpipes to keep mosquitoes out of your pipes at the gutter end. At the tank end, where your water enters your tank inlets, insect-proof screens or flap valves can stop mosquitoes entering your pipes. A plumbed tank inlet solution such as Blue Mountain Co’s Maelstrom<\/a>\u00a0is another effective way to keep mosquitoes out of your pipes. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you have a large roof area and lots of downpipes, your tank is located further away from your home or you simply don\u2019t want a collection of visible pipes that directly connect your roof to your tank, a wet system may be the right choice for you.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So long as you mosquito-proof your pipes and drain them between rainfall events, you can be comfortable you\u2019ve taken the necessary precautions to overcome the risks most commonly associated with wet rain harvesting systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
