If you wish to collect \u201cpotable\u201d water (water that\u2019s drinking quality), contact your roofing manufacturer to confirm whether the roofing material is suitable for potable water collection and obtain a certificate of classification.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You should also\u00a0ensure all your gutters, pipes and fittings are similarly suited to potable rainwater harvesting, and check any local Council or Government requirements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s generally agreed that the most suitable roof materials for harvesting potable water are:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  • COLORBOND\u00ae\u00a0and\u00a0ZINCALUME\u00ae\u00a0steel\u00a0(and similar aluminium, copper, galvanised steel or stainless steel roofing)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Glazed, well-fired tiles\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Concrete or cement tiles\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Clay tiles<\/li>\n
  • Fibro (only new type \u2013 not old Fibro, which was made with asbestos)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Composite, bitumen-based tiles\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Roofs made from materials that are known to be harmful to human health \u2013 for example, asbestos or lead \u2013 are not compatible with Rain Harvesting. Similarly, any fixtures or fittings on your roof such as flashings, screws or gutters that are made from these materials should be removed and replaced with safer options before you begin harvesting rainwater.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Some clay and cement tiles may also create difficulties with Rain Harvesting as they may leach unsafe minerals, oxides and coatings.
